Emily has started to grow out of her newborn outfits, as she’s almost 11 lbs. This is one of her 3 month onesies. Still a little long in the arms, but otherwise fits nicely!

Oh no! I have exactly zero photos of Emily from yesterday (I generally write these posts the morning after, and the backdate the timestamps). So I will write a short update instead. Emily is absolutely loving getting to spend time with her aunt, uncle and cousin (age 12). She’s playing happily for extremely long periods of time, and even flashing a few brilliant smiles. In fact, she has such determined focus while playing that she seems not to notice hunger or her own growing sleepiness! She’ll just keep playing, eyelids getting progressively heavier…
She’s still about a week or two out from being a consistent smiler, but I’m glad they at least get a glimpse of what’s to come. Uncle Alex has confirmed my suspicions that Emily is an extraordinarily good natured baby, and will likely continue to grow into a peaceful, happy, good natured kid. It somehow never occurred to me that you could start to see the core of someone’s personality even as newborns, but it makes so much sense!

Today I googled “games to play with babies” and the first suggestion was “showing your baby things” so here’s photo evidence of our first “game time”! Emily was full of real smiles today, and her brain was clearly tickled to see these shiny new objects. Her biggest smile came when I played the spoon and egg beater like an instrument. Oh boy! We’ve got a little musician here!

10 weeks! Emily is doing a lot better with eating without crying, so hopefully the trend continues. The color coded schedule has also been useful already too. So far there’s a very clear eating pattern. She’s got feedings at (on average) 12:30 am, 5:45 am, 8:30 am, 11:15 am, 2:15 pm, 5:30 pm, and 9:30 pm. That means her feedings are spaced out by 5.25h, 2.75h, 2.75h, 3.0h, 3.25h, 4.0h and 3.0h. It also means that technically she’s only got one overnight feeding, if you consider a normal adult sleep as being from 10:00 pm to 5:30 am. From what I’ve read, it’s more normal to still have two overnight feedings, but we’ve worked it out somehow anyway. To be fair, I’ve started going back to sleep after the 5:45 am feeding, which was one of my better decisions of parenting thus far!
